Scholarship program provides both financial support and mentorship

91�첥 in partnership with Elderwood, announced the launch of the Elderwood-Trocaire iCARE Career Pathway Scholarship. This initiative represents a $150,000 annual investment by Elderwood to support up to ten employees at a time as they pursue a practical nursing (LPN), registered nursing (RN), or bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) at Trocaire.

“This new scholarship program is another opportunity for Trocaire and Elderwood to work together to help strengthen the local healthcare workforce,” said Dr. Bassam Deeb, president, 91�첥. “The demand for qualified nurses locally continues, and with Elderwood’s commitment to investing in its employees, this program provides financial support, mentorship, and a clear path forward for those looking to advance in their healthcare careers.”

Beyond financial support, the partnership between Trocaire and Elderwood provides mentorship and guidance from experienced clinical and operational leaders, as well as helping the participants successfully navigate their education and transition into advanced nursing roles. Full-time and part-time academic program opportunities are available. Employees must continue working at least 15 hours per week while enrolled at Trocaire and commit to one-year of employment with Elderwood upon program completion.

91�첥 Student Massage Therapy Clinic Open to Public

Destress with a relaxing massage! 91�첥, a private, Catholic college providing a pathway for students to build careers of achievement and lives of purpose, has re-opened its student massage therapy clinic for the semester and is offering discounted 60-minute massage sessions to students, staff and the public. Under the supervision of instructors, Trocaire’s massage therapy students provide a variety of massages from Swedish to therapeutic at its on-campus clinic located at 360 Choate Ave., South Buffalo.

“Massage therapy techniques help to improve muscle tone and circulation and promote overall wellness, stress management and rehabilitation,” said Susan Sullivan, LMT, Trocaire’s massage therapy program director. “Our clinic is an opportunity for students to continue to practice the learned techniques in a real-world clinical setting as they work toward completing their program and preparing for their licensure exam.”

The Trocaire student massage therapy clinic runs through May 14 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 – 5 p.m. A 60-minute massage is $40 for the public. A paraffin hand dip can also be added for $5. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling 716-827-2518.

91�첥’s massage therapy programs include a 10-month certificate offering and a two-year associate in applied science degree. Each program combines lectures, laboratory experiences and clinical rotations at facilities throughout the region for a comprehensive understanding of both Eastern and Western massage therapy techniques. 91�첥 and FLPPS Continue Partnership to Strengthen New York’s Health Workforce Through CPT Program

Trocaire College announced today the continuation of its partnership with Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS) through the . Through this partnership, eligible students at 91�첥 can receive tuition coverage and support to pursue in-demand roles in health, behavioral health, or social care.

The CPT Program offers financial and educational support for eligible participants, covering tuition, books, and most academic supplies and fees. Wraparound support, including educational case management, tutoring, and job placement assistance is also available.

“Healthcare careers remain in demand here and across the state, and the CPT Program provides an added incentive for students who want to pursue or advance their careers in this in-demand industry,” said Jason Konesco, executive vice president, 91�첥. “As an opportunity college, Trocaire continues to explore ways to collaborate with others in the community to ensure we are addressing local workforce needs by providing qualified, skilled candidates upon graduation.”

Funded by the New York State Department of Health and administered regionally by the FLPPS Workforce Investment Organization, the CPT Program has supported nearly 1,800 students across Western New York, the Finger Lakes, and a portion of the Southern Tier. Together, 91�첥 and FLPPS aim to prepare skilled professionals who can meet the growing demand for health, behavioral health, and social care roles.

For the upcoming spring 2026 semester, 91�첥s offers the following CPT Program-eligible programs: certificate programs in licensed practical nursing and medical assisting.

“The CPT Program is about more than an education—it’s about creating opportunities for students, supporting employers, and strengthening our communities,” said Carol Tegas, CEO of FLPPS. “By continuing our partnership with institutions like 91�첥, we’re helping students gain the skills and support they need while building a stronger, more sustainable workforce that reflects and meets the evolving needs of New Yorkers.”

The CPT Program is open to individuals new to the field as well as those who are currently working in health, behavioral health, or social care who are seeking career advancement. Participants must complete their education or training program by spring 2027 and commit to three years of full-time service at a qualifying NYS Medicaid-enrolled provider serving at least 30 percent Medicaid and/or uninsured individuals. The service commitment must be fulfilled by 2031; a regularly updated list of qualified employers in the FLPPS region is available on the CPT Program website.

Individuals must apply for the CPT Program through the Workforce Investment Organization (WIO) that serves the county in which they have permanent residency. Learn more about the CPT Program at .

Now, through a new program with 91�첥, the health system is providing 23 fully paid scholarships to members of its workforce to pursue Associate Degrees in Registered Nursing and Radiologic Technology.

Focus on high school graduates in 14220 and 14210 zip codes with some or no college experience to discover career opportunities in healthcare; program being supported through grant by Council Member Christopher Scanlon

Starting this September, 91�첥 is offering Buffalo residents in the 14220 and 14210 zip codes an opportunity to explore healthcare career opportunities through its new Health Career Exploration Learn and Earn Program. Buffalo Common Council Member Christopher Scanlon is supporting the program through a $50,000 grant.

Designed for high school graduates with some or no college experience, the 10-week flexible program, which begins Sept. 26, enables participants to learn about the healthcare system and various career opportunities available within healthcare.

“This program is a unique opportunity for those who may be considering a career in healthcare, but not sure if they are ready to take the next step,” said Trocaire President Bassam M. Deeb, Ph.D. “Participants who successfully complete all the program requirements will not only be prepared to decide if a career in healthcare is right for them, but also decide the right career path to pursue.”

“91�첥 has a long history in my district of being a pipeline to the health care sector across the City of Buffalo and Western New York,” Council Member Scanlon said. “I am pleased to lend my support to Trocaire’s effort to provide high school graduates in the city the opportunity to learn about careers in health care and potentially move on to earn a degree in the field in which there is an extremely strong demand.”

Held online, the Health Career Exploration Learn and Earn Program will not require specific class meeting times but provide a weekly check-in with a healthcare career coach and mentor. Career opportunities highlighted in the program include nursing, medical assisting, radiologic technology, healthcare management, surgical technology, massage therapy, healthcare informatics, and others.

Participants who complete the full program with receive a $500 completion bonus in addition to a Trocaire Certificate of Completion. For those interested in taking their healthcare career to the next step, participants may have their Certificate of Completion converted into three college credits to be applied towards a Trocaire certificate or degree program. For those participants who decide to continue and start their healthcare certificate or degree program in 2023 at Trocaire, they will also be granted a $500 Trocaire scholarship.

91�첥 and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center partner to launch Roswell Scholars program

First of its kind program creates a career pathway from student to employee

To improve career pathways for students in the health sciences, and have partnered to launch the Roswell Scholars program.

Beginning Fall 2022, 10 Trocaire students will be accepted into the program annually to work onsite at the Buffalo-based cancer center with Roswell Park staff to learn about potential career paths with the goal of being hired upon completion of their degree. Roswell Park will provide mentors and shadow days, as well as professional development seminars to these students on an annual basis.

“Education has, and always will be, a central tenet of Roswell Park’s mission,” said Candace S. Johnson, Ph.D., President, CEO and M&T Bank Presidential Chair in Leadership, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The program with Trocaire is our chance to share our knowledge and expertise about the latest innovations in cancer care and research to best equip students to enter the healthcare workforce, and we hope that many of these nurses in training will one day join our team at the cancer center.”

Trocaire will provide annual $1,000 scholarships to program participants and facilitate educational programming that will complement and connect the students’ Roswell Park experience to their curriculum or training. In addition, Roswell Park will also provide the opportunity for students and graduates of the Roswell Scholars program to apply and interview for open positions that they are qualified for.

“With the demand for a well-trained healthcare workforce continuing to increase, the Roswell Scholars program is an opportunity for our students to go beyond the clinical experience and understand firsthand the variety of career opportunities available for them at one of the top cancer centers in the country, right in our own backyard,” said 91�첥 President Bassam M. The Roswell Scholars program is the first of its kind program for both Trocaire and Roswell Park. Over the past year, Trocaire and Roswell Park have been working toward this partnership, by first offering professional development training for Roswell Park staff through Trocaire’s workforce development programs. Clinical affiliations were also signed, and Trocaire students are currently participating in clinical experiences at Roswell Park.

91�첥 and Gerard Place partner to offer healthcare training courses

Applications now being accepted for programs in phlebotomy, sterile processing, and pharmacy technician

For the first time, and are partnering to offer courses geared towards future career opportunities in healthcare. Beginning this summer, programs in phlebotomy, sterile processing and pharmacy technician will be held at Gerard Place located at 2535 Bailey Ave., Buffalo. Each of these three certificate programs can be completed in as little as three months.

“Gerard Place is very pleased to be partnering with 91�첥 to offer our community wonderful opportunities for careers in the health care field,” said David Zapfel, president and CEO, Gerard Place. “We look forward to expanding our collaboration so that everyone can participate and move forward with good paying jobs in healthcare.”

Beginning July 12, and running Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sept. 13, the phlebotomy program includes in-person lectures, a three-week clinical placement, and soft-skills work readiness training with one-on-one mentoring and job coaching provided by Gerard Place.

The sterile processing program prepares students to develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile and non-sterile medical/surgical supplies and equipment for direct patient care and clinical use. This course begins Aug. 30 and runs Mondays and Wednesdays through Nov. 21.

The pharmacy technician program begins Sept. 27 and is held Tuesdays and Thursdays through Dec. 15. The 12-week program prepares pharmacy techs in working under the direction of a pharmacist to measure, mix, count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications based on the prescription orders as well as provide customer service.

“Partnering with Gerard Place is part of Trocaire’s workforce development strategy to help connect people with the resources and training needed for a new career pathway,” said Dr. Gary Smith, vice president, innovation and advancement, 91�첥. “The needed training for entry-level positions in phlebotomy, sterile processing, and pharmacy tech each take just a few months to complete. In addition, while each of these are rewarding career fields on their own, each can also be a steppingstone to more opportunities within the growing healthcare industry.”

February Alumni Spotlight: Thomas J. Bubar ’75

Veteran of the Month and Outstanding Alumnus, year after year!

In July 2021, Congressman Chris Jacobs named Thomas Bubar Veteran of the Month.

“Tom served our nation honorably in the Vietnam War and provided preventative medical care to his fellow service members, for which he earned numerous medals,” Jacobs said.

In November, Tom was also presented with the Vietnam War Veteran Pin by Congressman Brian Higgins. Following his military service, Tom came back to Western New York to serve our community, and would later go on to teach Nursing and Medical Assisting to the next generation.

After completing a degree in Sociology at Millard Fillmore College (now SUNY Buffalo), Tom came to Trocaire for his Nursing degree, and a few years later, received his Master’s Degree in Nursing from UB.

Thanks to his dedication as a revered Nursing and Medical Assisting Instructor, hundreds of students have followed in his path.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I enlisted in the Army in 1970. After basic training and medical training, and after serving stateside for nine months, I was sent to Vietnam. While in the Army, I was introduced to the medical field. I served as a preventative medicine technician where I sprayed for mosquitos in Vietnam, tested water quality, and inspected the sanitary conditions of our care center. I also helped my fellow servicemen by performing preventative medical procedures.”

Bubar is grateful that Trocaire opened up doors for him. In a recent interview, Tom shared his heartfelt gratitude: “ Trocaire opened doors for me; it represents hope and faith to me. They were very helpful with Veterans’ benefits and I remember having really great instructors. Back in 1975 there was even a basketball team! I played guard and we came in 4^th place in the Medaille Centennial.”

But Tom’s devotion to his alma mater did not stop on the basketball court. A former member of the Alumni Council and loyal donor for over 40 years, Tom is also a member of the Sr. Barbara Ciarico Legacy Society. He has generously arranged to support scholarship funds for male Nursing and Medical Assisting students through his estate plans.

“After Vietnam, I decided to pursue the medical field because I knew I would always have a job and I enjoyed helping people.If it hadn’t been for Trocaire, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ve put three children through college and they are all contributing to society as a teacher, a product manager and a CPA because I was able to provide them with an education.

Tom may have been recognized as Veteran of the Month, but at Trocaire, we consider him an outstanding alumnus, year after year! Congratulations, Tom!

What drew you to a career in healthcare/nursing?

I had family members that were licensed nurses and great role models, and I always had an interest in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. My original goal was to become a registered nurse and then a nurse practitioner. I completed my Nurse Practitioner licensure in 1999, and then went on a recommendation from a friend and mentor to pursue a license in Healthcare Administration, which I completed in 2004, receiving my Nursing Home Administrator licensure.

Describe your Trocaire experience. What does Trocaire mean to you?

Trocaire was a wonderful experience and the foundation on which I was able to build my career. Receiving my first degree (AAS Nursing) allowed me to obtain my first job in healthcare, a charge nurse with the McGuire Group at Seneca Manor Healthcare Facility, which I worked the first 4 years of my career. Trocaire was a wonderful learning environment, with faculty that cared about you and your success in the program. There was a sense of family, which made learning both exciting and rewarding. On a side note, I met my beautiful wife of 22 years at 91�첥 in the RN program.

What do you do now, and why do you love it?

I have been a nursing home administrator for 17 years. Being a nurse first and foremost, I enjoy helping and caring for individuals in need. Working with the elderly is very rewarding, knowing each day that you are making a true difference in someone’s life. I also love being part of a team that provides and strives each day for excellence in care for our residents. I have been the administrator at Canterbury Woods for 14 years. We have a great interdisciplinary team—it starts with our certified nursing assistants and licensed nurses, and extends to the vital services our ancillary departments provide as well.

Any advice you’d like to share with soon-to-be or new nurses?

Work hard each and every day, stay focused and most importantly, find your niche, as a career in nursing offers so many possibilities!
