Program Format
Time of Program: Primarily online with optional in-class sessions
Mode of Delivery: Online 鈥 鈥淎synchronous Plus Format.鈥 The program is primarily asynchronous, with weekly self-paced content. There is a voluntary, one-hour Q&A session each week, scheduled by the instructor, for those who wish to attend.听

Admission Requirements:
  • The program is designed as the Upper Division portion of a baccalaureate degree. Applicants must hold an Associate鈥檚 Degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited institution. Allied health disciplines are defined as those listed in the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions web site (See ). Applicants who have graduated from a program that is not accredited, but is approved and registered with the US Department of Education, are also eligible for admission.
  • Applicants must have completed 60 or more credit hours in their prior Associate鈥檚 degree program.
  • Applicants must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 in their prior program and must have earned a minimum grade of 鈥淐鈥 in all healthcare-related courses. Applicants who have a GPA below 2.50 may be considered for the BPS in Healthcare Management program if they can demonstrate extensive post-degree clinical experience in their Associate鈥檚 major or if they can provide information of extenuating circumstances which may have temporarily hampered their ability to maintain the 2.50 GPA.
Minimum Degree Requirements:
  • The Bachelor of Professional Studies in Healthcare Management program requires a total of 121 academic credits for completion.
    • Sixty-one (61) or more of these credits may come from an Associate Degree in Allied Health, Nursing, or other approved degree and transfer credit.
    • The sixty (60) credits represented in the upper division portion of the Bachelor of Professional Studies will typically consist of the following:
      • Twenty-seven (27) credits of Major coursework
      • Nine (9) credits of required Liberal Arts for the major
      • A total of an additional twenty-four (24) credit hours of Elective and/or Liberal Arts coursework including sufficient Liberal Arts credit to reach a minimum of thirty (30) credits of Liberal Arts overall
      • Candidates may transfer a total of up to ninety (90) credits
Students must complete a total of at least 121 semester hours and maintain a Grade Point Average of 2.0
Once a student satisfies the requirement for 30 credits of Liberal Arts, they may apply any credit to satisfy the remaining elective credit requirement.

  • PH350 and SOC300 may be taken as indicated below or students may take these courses during the summer starting with SU22.
  • HCM440 Capstone should be taken during the student鈥檚 last semester.听 The course will be offered every semester, but students should not take this course early in their sequence.

    Advanced Medical Terminology

    This course is designed for those with some experience or training in medical terminology but who lack the required facility with the more advanced uses and applications of medical terminology. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate sufficient mastery via a competency exam. In this course, students not only learn and understand medical terms themselves, but also their application, making them a valuable asset to a healthcare team.

    This course introduces students to supervisory concepts including planning, organizing, controlling, and budgeting techniques in a healthcare setting. Areas of focus will include staffing, communication, productivity, motivation, leadership styles, committee activities, teamwork and organizational culture. This course also introduces students to quality management, utilization review, and risk management.

    This course teaches critical skills including how to manage the complex dynamics in the workplace by improving interpersonal communications, and effectively addressing the challenges that are presented across various industries.

    Topics in Bioethics

    This course will introduce students to various topics of the instructor’s choosing in the areas of Bioethics.听 Bioethics can be seen as a branch of ethics, or more specifically, a branch of applied ethics.听 In many ways bioethical disclosure presupposes ethical disclosure.听 For this reason students will be introduced to an array of normative ethical theories and principles before embarking on a range of bioethical dilemma cases and topic areas.听 The interdisciplinary nature of Bioethics also demands that students be introduced to the latest medical and scientific breakthroughs in areas such as stem cell research, cloning, regenerative medicine, and genetic screening.听 The course will guide students through a wide range of bioethical issues which may include topics like abortion, euthanasia, embryonia stem cell research, cloning, scarce medical resources, and assisted reproduction.听 Students will be expected to carry out their own original research in the arena of bioethics and will be asked to write a longer argumentive style essay in order to complete the course.

This course will introduce the methods, practices, theories, and research, which includes the psychological aspects such as work attitudes and motivation, as well as group dynamics, organizational communication, and structures. This course requires a research project.

    Leadership and Change Management

    This course addresses the role of the informatics professional in helping an organization embrace change. The course will focus on the struggle between administration, and clinicians to identify the best solutions that will support the unique structures within healthcare organizations and the behaviors within these organizations that impact decision making. Challenges and solutions will be evaluated from a macro (organization-wide) perspective and micro (specialty and individual level) perspective, with emphasis on aligning work to be carried out against organizational values, mission and vision and gaining consensus that a selected solution will effectively deliver services within an organization.

    An introduction to epidemiology, this course covers the principles and methods of epidemiologic investigation including describing the patterns of illness in populations and research designs for investigating the etiology of disease. The course introduces quantitative measures to determine risk, association and procedures for standardization of rates.

    Externship Seminar

    This course will allow students to demonstrate integration of baccalaureate allied health knowledge into practice. After selecting a clinical area of practice, the student will work with an externship preceptor, and collaborate with a faculty member for an in-depth externship experience. All students are required to complete 60 practicum hours. Emphasis is on critical thinking, communication, leadership, management and evaluation. Application of core concepts pertaining to health, ethics and care will be highlighted. Students will work with Allied Health Instructor to secure externship placements.

    Students in this course will explore leading-practice models and approaches for strategic planning. These models will include environmental scanning, establishing strategic goals and priorities, developing implementation strategies and change initiatives, performance measurement and evaluation, and communicating strategy and performance to diverse categories of stakeholders.
